Sustainability transformations

This page brings together research and thinking on social transformation undertaken for Friends of the Earth.

Environmental activists and campaigners increasingly understand their goals as stimulating broader social and economic transformation, but in most cases their efforts to link tactical campaign goals with transformation are ad-hoc. The papers and presentations below make preliminary attempts to provide strong foundations for transformational campaigning, with reference to work on socio-technical transitions by Frank Geels and others, and to work on socially empowering transformation by Erik Olin Wright.

Delivering Transformation and its accompanying presentation was prepared for Friends of the Earth Europe in 2011.

Transformation, justice and sustainability was prepared for Friends of the Earth Netherlands in 2014. A Dutch version was published in Down To Earth magazine in January 2015.
